The Center for Disease Control (CDC) states it is unknown how long the air inside a room occupied by someone with COVID-19 remains infectious. Using a PCR cassette and a high-volume rotary vane pump, a defined volume of air is capture in a 3-stage cassette. Sample collection time is 1 hour.
Surface samples are collected by the WHO defined swab sampling method. Samples are immersed in a buffer solution that inactivates the virus (if present), rendering it non-infectious.
Samples are analyzed using a protocol recommended by the US CDC called Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR). Since COVID-19 is a single strand RNA virus, it must be converted to DNA and is attached with a specific genetic marker. The DNA is then multiplied through this process for detection of the marker once it passes a certain threshold.
A positive result indicates the presence of SARS-CoV-2 genetic material. If the genetic material was not present, the PCR process would not have made copies and the result would be negative.
Environmental SARS-CoV-2 specimens contain a specific nucleocapsid N gene that is analyzed through laboratory testing. Since clinical or human-derived COVID-19 samples contain a P gene, environmental test kits cannot be used for human samples.
You will need to implement a Coronavirus Environmental Remediation Plan (ERP). The ERP will include cleaning and disinfecting procedures, swab sampling site strategy, testing frequency protocol, accredited laboratory analysis for environmental swab samples, review of in house cleaning and disinfecting protocols.
You will need a Coronavirus Environmental Management Plan (EMP). The EMP documents all cleaning and disinfecting procedures, safety plans, standard operating procedures and testing recommendations in compliance with WorkSafe BC regulations.
